During a routine annual inspection of one of our clients counterbalance forklift trucks, our engineer carried out a full thorough examination in accordance with LOLER & PUWER which looks at everything from tyres to forks and brakes to steering.

During the inspection of the forklift leaf chains, our engineer checked the wear using a specialist gauge which gives us a very accurate reading. The pitch of the chain was measured to be a 3/4” pitch which means we have to take the overall measurement over 21 pins. 2% wear was observed across both chains which meant our client could continue using the forklift but plans had to made to replace the chains as soon as possible.

Had the chain wear measured 3% wear or more, the chain would be classed as dangerous and would have to be taken out of service immediately and replaced before the forklift could be used again. New chains were ordered and replaced within 2 weeks ensuring the continued safe use of the forklift and preventing any unpredictable costly downtime to our clients operations.
