A forklift is a powered industrial truck used to lift and move materials over short distances. The forklift was developed in the early 20th century by various companies, including Clark, which made transmissions, and Yale & Towne Manufacturing, which made hoists.
Thorough examinations for forklift trucks is relatively comparable to the MOT for cars – a compulsory check to determine that the mechanical parts of your forklift are in safe working order. It is not the same as planned maintenance and is mandatory, regardless of whether your truck has been recently serviced.
Nonetheless, there remains a considerable amount of uncertainty around these inspections, with many forklifts being inadequately inspected. Many forklift truck examinations will only cover the lifting mechanism, leaving crucial safety components, such as steering, brakes and tyres not inspected. Such inspections leave trucks hazardous and illegal, leaving employers legally exposed.
And so consequently, a thorough examination is not a place to cut corners which is why the two main bodies in the forklift truck industry, the FLTA & BITA, working with the HSE have developed the definitive national scheme, administered via CFTS.
With a CFTS thorough examination, you receive clear and comprehensive documentation, underpinned by uniformly high-quality standards that comply fully with both LOLER & PUWER legislations.
