Locked Groove Ltd was contracted by a marine research organization operating the RV Ocean Explorer to perform a statutory load test and inspection of the vessel’s A-frame in Newcastle. Following recent hydraulic upgrades, re-certification was required to meet LOLER and DNV standards before deploying a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in the North Atlantic.

Our Approach
1. Pre-Test Inspection
Our engineers carried out a thorough visual survey and NDT of key areas, including pivot points, welds, and the crossbeam. Hydraulic hoses and fittings were checked for integrity, pressure ratings, and alignment.
2. Load Testing Setup
- Test load: 12.5 tonnes (1.25x SWL) using calibrated water bags
- Load monitoring: Digital load cell with real-time data logging
- Safety: Exclusion zones and detailed risk assessments in place
3. Load Application
The A-frame was exercised through its full range of motion under load. At each stage, we monitored for excessive deflection, movement, or signs of instability. The load was held for 10 minutes at key operational angles to simulate real conditions.
4. Post-Test Review
Following load removal, we conducted a second round of NDT and dimensional checks to confirm no structural deformation or stress damage. The hydraulic system was retested under working pressure.
